Breast cancer radiation side effects

Breast cancer radiation side effects

Breast cancer radiation side effects are much less compared to the side effects of chemotherapy. And the radiation therapy itself is completely painless.

The main side effect of breast cancer radiation is tiredness. You won’t be tired all the time though but sometimes extreme fatigue can take the upper hand. Make sure you have a lot of rest afterwards.

Radiation can be compared with sunbathing, so sun burnt side-effects can occur like:

  • skin colouring pinkish, red or darker

  • skin-burn which happens more with patients who had a lumpectomy compared to patients who had a mastectomy without any breast reconstruction

  • peeling of the skin

  • crispy and swollen skin

  • flu like symptoms you also have after a severe sunburn

The hospital should provide you with creams to counter these side effects. At home, keep on using Aloe Vera which is very soothing. Whatever cream you use, try it out first on a small area to see whether your cream doesn’t aggravate the problem.

Some people that got breast cancer radiation therapy also complain about:

  • a loss of appetite

  • soreness of the breast

  • heartburn and nausea when during the radiation also the oesophagus gets radiated
